All Midwives are required to adhere to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct, providing evidence-based care while maintaining the highest standards of practice. One crucial requirement for midwives is to have the appropriate level of indemnity insurance, providing protection and peace of mind for both midwives and their clients.

Historically, midwives relied on the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) for indemnity insurance. However, in 1994, the landscape shifted when the RCM withdrew its cover for independent midwives (IMs) due to escalating costs. This left many midwives facing uncertainty and challenges in accessing essential insurance coverage.

In response to this gap in support, the NMC’s legislation was amended in July 2014, mandating that all healthcare providers, including midwives, must have appropriate indemnity cover. Yet, despite this legal requirement, many independent midwives struggled to find comprehensive independent midwife insurance solutions.

Healthcare Professional Liability Insurance Details

The insurance policy satisfies the demands and needs of an Independent Midwife, domiciled in England, Wales and Scotland, registered with Zest and qualified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Cover is provided for bodily injury, mental injury, illness, disease or death of any patient caused by any negligent act, error or omission committed by an independent midwife in breach of their professional duty either in the conduct of their business or in the provision of Good Samaritan Acts.
