Where It All Began
All I ever wanted, growing up, was to be a mum — and that’s exactly where my journey began. I had my first baby at 21, learning on my feet in the rawest and most beautiful ways. Motherhood became the most challenging and transformative experience of my life, and it’s a journey I’m still on.
My second birth opened the door to midwifery. She showed me what women’s bodies are truly capable of and how life-changing birth can be when you feel heard, supported, and trusted. That moment lit a spark in me that has never gone out.
My academic path wasn’t easy. I was learning so much — not only about midwifery, but about myself. There were moments that stretched me and moments that grounded me, but I made it through and earned my degree. The pride I felt was indescribable, and that achievement shaped the midwife I am today.
My career began in a caseloading model centred around continuity, and it was everything I believed midwifery should be. Building deep relationships taught me the kind of midwife I wanted to be. When I could no longer work in that way, I burned out. It was painful to feel my values pulled away by the pressures of an overstretched system.
I’ve always gravitated toward community-based models — homebirth teams, continuity teams, anything that allowed me to stay connected to families. But these services rarely lasted within the limits of mainstream maternity care. So I stepped back, trained as a health visitor, and deepened my understanding of the postnatal months, because saying goodbye at six weeks never felt right.
Now feels like the time to honour the midwife and the woman motherhood shaped me to be. No more compromising the level of care I believe in. No more shrinking to fit a system that can’t offer families the time, presence, and continuity they deserve.
This is why I’m choosing independent midwifery — so I can offer care that aligns with my heart, my values, and the way I know families thrive: through time, connection, trust, and true continuity.
